LSE MODEL UNITED NATIONS
#TEAMLSE
Model United Nations is a unique form of academic debate where participants take on the roles of diplomats at a United Nations conference, and discuss important political, social, economic and cultural issues. However, Model UN involves more than just public speaking skills; delegates must also demonstrate high levels of diplomacy, lobbying, negotiation and policy-writing, as well as quality research skills and awareness of international affairs.
Model UN conferences recognise outstanding delegates for their performance both in formal debates, and more informal negotiation settings. TeamLSE, the LSE’s Model United Nations team, have been awarded 42 awards over 4 conferences in the last year, demonstrating our impressive standard of training and performance.
Refining the skills required to compete at Model United Nations conferences requires dedication and practice; we hold training sessions once a week in the autumn term, and twice in the spring term. Senior society members train and advise our delegates in the public speaking, lobbying and negotiation skills needed to succeed both in debate and in a professional environment.
While our training is rigorous and stretches our delegates’ academic tenacity and diplomatic fluency, it’s also vital that participation remains accessible to UNSOC members from all backgrounds, with all levels of experience. We organise ‘give it a go’ sessions, where we simulate a full conference to train beginner delegates; our first this year welcomed over a hundred participants.
Between the 21st and 23rd of February, #TeamLSE made the long and treacherous journey to the London International Model United Nations Conference. While home comforts may have played their role (this year’s #TeamLSE ManMUN delegation would certainly say so), our success was undoubtedly down to the hard work of all delegates – which certainly paid off, with a truly outstanding awards list, and the conservation of our Best Small Delegation award.
Between the 29th of November and the 1st of December, #TeamLSE took the more scenic bus route to Nottingham for NottsMUN 2019. Arriving in the city centre (alongside our friends from across the Strand), we had a quick turnaround before registration, so explored the local culture and visited the very memorable ‘Amazing Thai Café’, which certainly lived up to its name with noodles for the shocking price of £2.50.
On November 8th to 10th, TeamLSE embarked on the 25th session of Cambridge International Model United Nations Conference (CUIMUN), one of the most prestigious conferences in The UK held at various colleges across the University of Cambridge. With nine delegates and two chairs heading to the quaint town of Cambridge for a weekend of fiery debates, this was a first conference for many attending freshers.
Travelling to a place like Oxford is always a mesmerising experience, irrespective of the purpose of the visit; to be in a place so richly steeped in history, in a place resting on the shoulders of hundreds of world-renowned legends is a great honour, let alone a pleasure.
Last weekend, October 18-20th, #TeamLSE set out on the arduous 200-mile trek north to the University of Manchester for ManMUN 2019. Despite being the first conference for several delegates, we worked hard throughout the weekend and the 2019 cohort proved ourselves worthy of the mantle we've inherited.
Madrid. 2019. Harvard WorldMUN. 21 brave LSE students threw themselves unto the breach once more, and valiantly battled adversaries originating from anywhere between South America and across the street. With 18 delegates and three chairs, #TeamLSE touched down in Madrid and - in what could only be described as the classic SloMo Bad-Boys-style walk - left the airport to claim Spain's capital for queen and (adopted) country. Sunday, the first full day in Madrid, was spent exploring.
From the 21st to the 23rd of February, #TeamLSE attended the London International Model United Nations conference. To say the least, the weekend was a resounding success. #TeamLSE secured their sixth victory by winning Best Small Delegation yet again! Not only was #TeamLSE represented pristinely by our delegates, but we also had a large number of LSE students who attended the conference as chairs. Even the Secretary-General of LIMUN, Charis Yeap was none other than a proud LSE alumni.
The past weekend of the 16-18 of November, #TeamLSE undertook the long and arduous coach journey to Nottingham, in order to participate in NottsMUN, the resident MUN conference. With a troop of 10 brave soldiers, we took to the committees and once again proved ourselves to be the world-class MUN team that we are.
Just this past weekend, #TeamLSE traversed the plains up North and arrived in Cambridge for Cambridge University International Model United Nations. Despite the cold weather and a serious lack of alcohol, our team impressively swept the conference and emerged victorious with the Best Large Delegation Award.
The extended weekend of the 26 - 28 of October, #TeamLSE graced the Oxford International Model United Nations conference their presence. While cold weather may have been an unforeseen challenge, our team managed to defy the odds and sweep the entire event clear of awards.
